About Porcelain Veneers and E.max

A porcelain veneer is a very thin layer of porcelain bonded to the front of a tooth. E.max (glass-ceramic) lets light through in a way similar to a natural tooth, and it can be used for both veneers and crowns. If your tooth structure is suitable, these can be an option for changing the colour or shape of teeth, or for mild alignment issues.

Who is it for?

  • Teeth with discolouration that whitening hasn't fixed
  • Front teeth that are uneven in shape or length, gapped or slightly chipped
  • Teeth with worn surfaces
  • Adults with suitable teeth and healthy gums

The treatment process

  1. Examination and shade checkWe look at your tooth structure, colour and gum health, and decide whether veneers are suitable.
  2. Preparing the tooth surfaceIf needed, a very thin layer of the tooth surface is reshaped and an impression is taken.
  3. Made in the labYour veneer or E.max restoration is made just for you in a dental lab.
  4. BondingThe fit and colour are checked, then the restoration is fixed to the tooth with a special adhesive.
  5. Result and follow-upThe colour and shape of the tooth are now improved, and we follow up with regular check-ups.

After treatment

  • Don't bite hard things (such as ice or bones) with your front teeth.
  • Brush carefully along the edges of your veneers and use dental floss.
  • If you clench or grind your teeth, your dentist may recommend a night guard.
  • Come in for a check-up every six months.

What is a porcelain veneer?

A veneer is a very thin layer of ceramic or porcelain bonded only to the outer surface of a front tooth. Very little tooth is removed to place it (in some cases none at all). Veneers can be used to correct colour, shape and length, and small alignment issues.

What is E.max?

E.max is a type of glass-ceramic made with lithium disilicate, and it lets a lot of light through. It can be made as a veneer or a crown, and it looks close to a natural tooth. The material is chosen based on the condition of the tooth and the look you would like.

When are they used?

  • Dark discolouration that whitening has not fixed (for example, tetracycline staining)
  • Chipped, worn or uneven front teeth
  • Small gaps between teeth
  • Mild alignment issues (in suitable cases)

The steps

  • The target shape and colour are planned with an examination, photos and impressions.
  • The teeth are prepared as needed, and temporary veneers may be fitted.
  • The veneers or crowns made in the lab are tried in.
  • Once the fit and colour are approved, they are bonded to the teeth with a special adhesive.

Care tips

  • Brush twice a day and floss.
  • Avoid habits like opening bottles with your teeth or biting hard seeds or ice.
  • If you clench your teeth at night, wear a night guard.
  • Come in for a check-up every six months.

Frequently asked questions

Do my teeth need to be filed down for veneers?
In most cases only a very small amount of reshaping is needed. How much depends on the planned restoration and the condition of the tooth.
What is the difference between veneers and E.max?
Both are ceramic-based cosmetic restorations. Your dentist will suggest the right one for you based on where it goes, the thickness needed and how much strength is required.
Are they suitable for everyone?
No. We check your tooth structure, gums and biting habits. If veneers aren't right for you, we suggest other options.
Can veneers damage my teeth?
A small amount of tooth may need to be removed, so the treatment cannot easily be undone. We assess whether it suits you at the examination, along with the alternatives.
How long do veneers last?
It depends on your oral care, your habits and whether you clench your teeth. With good care and check-ups they can last a long time, but no one can promise an exact time.
Do veneers change colour over time?
Ceramic surfaces don't stain noticeably from tea or coffee. But the natural teeth and gums around them can change colour, so the match may need to be reviewed over time.
Could a cosmetic filling be used instead of veneers?
For small corrections, composite bonding can be an option. Your dentist decides which suits you based on the scope and your expectations.
