About Teeth Whitening
Over time, tea, coffee, smoking and age can make teeth look darker. Teeth whitening uses gels, applied to the tooth surface under a dentist's supervision, to lighten their colour. It can be done here at the clinic (in-office) or at home with trays made just for you.
Who is it for?
- Adults whose teeth and gums are healthy enough for whitening
- People with staining caused by external factors
- People who have already had any cavities and gum problems treated
- Not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding
The treatment process
- Recording your shadeWe note the current colour of your teeth, and an examination shows whether whitening is suitable for you.
- Protecting your gumsA protective barrier is placed so the whitening gel does not touch your gums.
- Applying the whitening gelThe whitening gel is applied to the tooth surfaces under your dentist's supervision.
- Result and checkThe shade you reach varies from person to person. Your dentist will explain what to expect with sensitivity and how to care for your teeth.
After treatment
- For the first 48 hours, avoid dark drinks such as tea, coffee, cola and red wine.
- Some temporary sensitivity is possible; your dentist may suggest a desensitising product.
- Fillings and crowns do not change colour with whitening, so colour matching is assessed separately.
- The shade you reach and how long it lasts vary from person to person.
Why do teeth change colour?
Staining can come from outside the tooth (tea, coffee, cola, red wine, smoking) or from inside it (natural changes with age, a past injury, root canal treatment, or certain medicines taken in childhood). The right whitening method and the result you can expect depend on what caused the staining.
Whitening methods
- In-office whitening: At the clinic, your gums are protected and a gel is applied under your dentist's supervision. Some systems also use a light or laser.
- Whitening at home with trays: You use trays made just for you at home, for the time and at the strength your dentist sets.
- Combined whitening: Both methods can be planned together.
- Internal whitening for non-vital teeth: Possible for a single tooth that has had root canal treatment and turned darker.
Before whitening
We start with an examination of your mouth. Any cavities need to be treated, tartar removed and gum disease brought under control first. Otherwise, sensitivity and discomfort during whitening can increase. Existing fillings and crowns do not change colour with whitening, so if you have any at the front, we look at colour matching separately afterwards.
Sensitivity after whitening
The whitening gel can cause temporary tooth sensitivity or mild gum irritation during and after treatment. This usually settles quickly. If needed, your dentist may suggest a desensitising toothpaste or gel. If the symptoms last, contact the clinic.
Keeping your new shade
- For the first 48 hours, avoid dark food and drinks, and do not smoke.
- Regular brushing and flossing help reduce surface stains.
- A scaling and check-up every six months helps keep the colour.
- If needed, top-up whitening can be planned at intervals your dentist recommends.
Whitening is not done during pregnancy or breastfeeding, under the age of 16, with advanced gum disease, or if you are allergic to any of the ingredients. This page is for general information only; whether whitening is right for you is decided at your examination.
