About Bridges and Dentures
Missing teeth can affect how you chew, how you speak and how your face looks. They can also let the neighbouring teeth drift into the gap. A bridge replaces a missing tooth by resting on the teeth on either side of the gap, and it stays fixed in place. When many teeth are missing, a partial or full removable denture may be the better option.
Who is it for?
- People missing one or a few teeth
- People with healthy teeth on both sides of the gap to support a bridge
- People missing many teeth who need a removable denture
- Patients who can't have implants or would prefer not to
The treatment process
- A missing toothA gap left by a missing tooth can let the neighbouring teeth drift and make chewing harder.
- Preparing the support teethThe teeth on either side of the gap are prepared to hold the bridge, and impressions are taken.
- Fitting the bridgeThe bridge, made in the lab, is fixed in place once the fit has been checked.
After treatment
- Clean under the bridge with special floss or an interdental brush.
- Take your removable denture out every day to brush it, and if possible leave it out at night.
- If the denture rubs or causes a sore spot, don't try to adjust it yourself. Come to the clinic.
- Regular check-ups let us keep an eye on how the denture fits and on your gum health.
Why should missing teeth be replaced?
A lost tooth doesn't only change how your smile looks. It also affects chewing and speaking. If the gap stays open for a long time, the neighbouring teeth drift towards it, the opposite tooth can grow longer, and your bite can become unbalanced. Over time, this can lead to more decay, gum problems and jaw joint discomfort.
What is a fixed bridge, and how is it made?
For a bridge, the healthy teeth on both sides of the gap are reshaped and covered with crowns, and the missing tooth is attached between them. An impression is taken and a temporary bridge is fitted. The permanent bridge is made in the lab and bonded in place after a try-in. A bridge stays fixed in your mouth. You don't take it out.
Types of removable dentures
- Partial denture: used when some teeth are missing. It holds onto the remaining teeth with clasps or special attachments.
- Full denture: rests on the gums in a jaw with no teeth.
- Implant-supported denture: clips onto a few implants and is a more stable option.
Bridge, denture or implant: which one?
- A bridge can be a quick solution when the neighbouring teeth are healthy and there are enough of them, but those teeth need to be reshaped.
- A removable denture doesn't need surgery. It takes some getting used to and needs regular care.
- An implant doesn't touch the neighbouring teeth, but it needs enough bone and good general health.
- The choice is made at the examination, based on where the gap is, the state of the neighbouring teeth, your bone and what you expect.
Caring for your bridge or denture
Clean under a bridge with special bridge floss or an interdental brush. Take removable dentures out after meals and rinse them. At night, take them out and keep them in water, not dry. Regular check-ups help keep the denture fitting well and your gums healthy.
