About Zirconia Crowns

A crown is a cap that covers the whole tooth and protects it. Zirconia is a metal-free material. Because it is strong and lets light through, it is used for both front and back teeth.

Who is it for?

  • Teeth with large fillings, or teeth that are broken or weakened
  • Teeth that need strengthening after root canal treatment
  • Teeth with an uneven colour or shape
  • Cases that need a bridge or a crown on an implant

The treatment process

  1. ExaminationWe look at the tooth and talk about the colour and shape you'd like.
  2. Preparing the toothThe tooth is reshaped as much as needed to make room for the crown.
  3. Taking impressionsAn impression of the prepared tooth is taken and the crown is made in the lab to fit it.
  4. Fitting the zirconia crownOnce the fit, colour and bite have been checked, the crown is permanently bonded in place.

After treatment

  • While you have a temporary crown, avoid sticky and hard foods.
  • Teeth with crowns can still decay, so brush carefully along the edges of the crown.
  • If you clench your teeth at night, your dentist may recommend a night guard.
  • Regular check-ups let us keep an eye on how the crown sits with your gums.

What is zirconia, and why is it used?

Zirconia is a metal-free ceramic used in dentistry for crowns, bridges and restorations on implants. It is very strong, and because it lets light through, it looks close to a natural tooth. With metal-based crowns, a dark line can sometimes appear at the gum edge over time. This isn't expected with zirconia.

When is a crown needed?

  • For teeth with large fillings that have lost too much structure to be protected by a filling
  • For teeth at risk of breaking after root canal treatment
  • For broken, cracked or badly worn teeth
  • For front teeth whose shape or colour is a cosmetic concern
  • For the top part of a bridge or an implant

What is done to the tooth before a crown?

To make room for the crown, the outer surface of the tooth is carefully made smaller. Then an impression is taken, either with impression material or a digital scanner, and the colour is chosen. While your permanent crown is being made, the tooth is protected with a temporary crown.

How much time passes between visits?

The crown is made in a lab, so there is usually a wait of anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. It depends on how much work is involved and the lab's schedule. At the try-in, we check the fit, your bite and the colour. Once any adjustments are made, the crown is permanently bonded.

Caring for a zirconia crown

  • Brush carefully where the crown meets the gum.
  • Clean between your teeth with floss or an interdental brush.
  • Don't bite on hard things like ice, pen tops or fruit stones.
  • If you clench your teeth at night, your dentist may recommend a night guard.
  • Come in for a check-up every six months.

Frequently asked questions

Does the tooth need to be reshaped for a zirconia crown?
Yes, the tooth needs to be made a little smaller so the crown can sit on it. How much depends on the tooth and the planned crown.
How many visits does it take?
It's usually done over a few visits: preparation and impressions, a try-in, then fitting. Timing can vary with the lab work.
What's the difference between zirconia and porcelain?
The zirconia base contains no metal and lets light through more naturally. Which material suits you is decided after the examination.
How long does a zirconia crown last?
It depends on how you care for your teeth, whether you clench, and how often you come for check-ups. With good care it can last a long time, but no one can promise an exact number of years.
Will the crown change colour over time?
Zirconia doesn't stain from tea, coffee or smoking the way natural teeth do. But the gum around the crown and your natural teeth can change colour, so the colour match may need another look over time.
Will my tooth feel sensitive after the crown?
In the first few days you may feel some sensitivity to hot and cold, or notice your bite feels different. If it lasts or gets worse, come back to the clinic for a check.
Are there alternatives to zirconia?
Yes, there are options such as porcelain fused to metal or E.max ceramic. You and your dentist decide together, based on where the tooth is, the biting force on it and the look you want.
