About Clear Aligner Treatment
Clear aligner treatment moves your teeth step by step into a digitally planned position, using a series of clear aligners that you change in order. You can take them out to eat and to brush. Whether the treatment suits you is assessed with an examination and records.
Who is it for?
- People with mild to moderate crowding
- People with gaps between their teeth (diastema)
- People who had orthodontic treatment before and whose teeth have shifted again
- People who can wear their aligners for the recommended hours each day
The treatment process
- Crooked teethCrooked or gapped teeth can be a concern both for appearance and for keeping them clean.
- Wearing clear alignersClear aligners made from your digital plan are worn one after another, in order.
- Aligning the teethEach aligner gradually moves your teeth towards the planned position.
- Completing treatmentAt the end of treatment, a retainer is recommended to keep your teeth in their new position.
After treatment
- Aligners usually need to be worn 20 to 22 hours a day; your dentist will set your exact time.
- With your aligners in, drink only water.
- Clean your aligners every day and put them back in only after brushing your teeth.
- At the end of treatment, a retainer is used to keep your teeth in their new position.
How do clear aligners work?
Using an intraoral scan or an impression, we create a digital model and plan where your teeth should end up. Based on this plan, a series of clear aligners is made, each moving your teeth a few tenths of a millimetre. You usually switch to the next aligner every one to two weeks, so your teeth line up gradually.
When are they suitable?
- Mild to moderate crowding, gaps or tight spacing
- People who had orthodontic treatment before and whose teeth have shifted over time (relapse)
- Adults who do not want metal wires and brackets
- People whose gums and jawbone are healthy enough
Serious jaw misalignment, some complex rotations or cases that need surgery may call for traditional braces or surgical support. That is why suitability is assessed with an examination and records.
Wearing your aligners
- Keep your aligners in for about 20 to 22 hours a day; take them out only to eat and brush.
- Take your aligners out before drinking anything other than water.
- After every meal, brush your teeth and then put your aligners back in.
- Keep your aligners in their case, not wrapped in a napkin.
How long treatment takes
Depending on how complex your case is, how consistently you wear your aligners and how regularly you come for check-ups, treatment can take from a few months to one or two years. Afterwards, you need to wear a retainer so your teeth stay in their new position.
How is it different from traditional braces?
Clear aligners are removable and hard to notice, while metal braces stay fixed. With aligners, your own discipline directly affects the result. Which option suits you is decided together with your dentist, based on how complex your case is and what you expect.
