About Botox Treatment

Botulinum toxin (Botox) is a medical treatment that temporarily reduces the activity of the muscle it is applied to. In dentistry, it may be used after the dentist's assessment for problems such as muscle pain caused by teeth clenching and grinding (bruxism), and for treatments related to facial expression. Whether it is right for you is decided at the examination.

Who is it for?

  • People with jaw or facial muscle complaints linked to teeth clenching or grinding
  • Adults considering treatment related to facial expression
  • People who are not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • People whose general health is suitable for the treatment (please tell your dentist about any medicines you take and any conditions you have)

The treatment process

  1. ExaminationThe dentist assesses your teeth clenching, grinding and chewing muscle complaints.
  2. PlanningThe dentist decides where and how much to apply, and explains the possible effects.
  3. TreatmentThe treatment is quick and done with a fine needle.
  4. Watching the effectMuscle activity is reduced for a while. How long this lasts varies from person to person, and we follow up with a check-up.

After treatment

  • Avoid rubbing the treated area for as long as your dentist advises.
  • Mild redness or bruising can happen and usually passes.
  • The effect is temporary, and how long it lasts varies from person to person.
  • If you notice anything unexpected, contact the clinic.

What is Botox used for in dentistry?

Botulinum toxin is a medicine that temporarily reduces the movement of the muscle it is applied to. In dentistry, it is considered mainly where the dentist finds it suitable for overworked chewing muscles (masseter) and muscle pain caused by night-time clenching and grinding (bruxism). It is given only by an authorised dentist, within the rules set by law.

What is bruxism?

Bruxism is the habit of clenching and grinding your teeth without realising it, at night or during the day. It can lead to worn teeth, jaw joint pain, morning headaches and tired chewing muscles. Treatment usually starts with a night guard, stress management and changing habits. Botox can be a supporting option in selected cases.

The treatment and afterwards

The treatment is quick and done with a fine needle. The effect usually starts within a few days and is temporary; how long it lasts varies from person to person. Mild redness or bruising may appear afterwards. Avoid rubbing the area for as long as your dentist advises, and follow the instructions you are given.

Who should not have it?

  • People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • People with muscle or nerve conditions
  • People allergic to the substance used
  • People taking certain medicines (for example some antibiotics or muscle relaxants). Please share your list of medicines with your dentist.
